NYFW 2016 EXCLUSIVE: PRIVATE TOUR OF FAIRY TALE FASHION AT THE MUSEUM AT FIT

TAC - Fairy Tale Fashion Private Tour-shoes

To kick off NYFW 2016, READart joins The Nouveau Classical Project‘s Arts Council today for a private tour of Fairy Tale Fashion at The Museum of FIT which will be led by Colleen Hill, MFIT Associate Curator of Accessories.

Fairly Tale Fashion is a unique and imaginative exhibition that examines fairy tales through the lens of high fashion. In versions of numerous fairy tales by authors such as Charles Perrault, the Brothers Grimm, and Hans Christian Andersen, it is evident that dress is often used  to symbolize a character’s transformation, vanity, power, or privilege. The importance of Cinderella’s glass slippers is widely known, for example, yet these shoes represent only a fraction of the many references to clothing in fairy tales.

Fairy Tale Fashion features more than 80 objects placed within dramatic, fantasy-like settings designed by architect Kim Ackert. Since fairy tales are not often set in a specific time period, Fairy Tale Fashion includes garments and accessories dating from the 18th century to the present. There is a particular emphasis on extraordinary 21st-century fashions by designers such as Thom Browne, Dolce & Gabbana, Tom Ford, Giles, Mary Katrantzou, Marchesa, Alexander McQueen, Rick Owens, Prada, Rodarte, and Walter VanBeirendonck, among others.

Laura Poitras: Astro Noise

Wednesday, February 3, 2016
9:30–11:30 am
Whitney Museum of American Art
99 Gansevoort Street

RSVP online

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
The Whitney Museum of American Art will debut Laura Poitras: Astro Noise, the first solo museum exhibition by artist, filmmaker, and journalist Laura Poitras. This immersive installation of new work builds on topics important to Poitras, including mass surveillance, the war on terror, the U.S. drone program, Guantánamo Bay Prison, occupation, and torture. Some of these issues have been investigated in her films, including CITIZENFOUR, which won the 2015 Academy Award for Best Documentary, and in her reporting, which was awarded a 2014 Pulitzer Prize.

For the exhibition, Poitras is creating an interrelated series of installations in the Whitney’s eighth-floor Hurst Family Galleries. The exhibition expands on her project to document post–9/11 America, engaging visitors in formats outside her non-fiction filmmaking. Instead she will create immersive environments that incorporate documentary footage, architectural interventions, primary documents, and narrative structures to invite visitors to interact with the material in strikingly intimate and direct ways.

The title, Astro Noise, refers to the faint background disturbance of thermal radiation left over from the Big Bang and is the name Edward Snowden gave to an encrypted file containing evidence of mass surveillance by the National Security Agency that he shared with Poitras in 2013. The Snowden archive partially inspired Poitras’s presentation at the Whitney.

Laura Poitras: Astro Noise is organized by Jay Sanders, Curator and Curator of Performance.

SUBVERSIONARY MISSES: GUEST CURATOR FEATURE ON VERNI

heather-at-tropicalia-DSC_8913-2500px

This fall, READart’s Heather Zises was invited to be the first Guest Curator on artist social media platform Verni. Guest Curators select three artists and explain their impact in today’s society.

Heather’s curatorial theme for Verni’s new feature is “Subversionary Misses”. This theme has an intentional double meaning. “Subversionary Misses” refers to female artists who are making art (in any media) that is considered subversive and/or addresses subversive topics. “Subversionary Misses” also points to subversive art that is made by females but is largely ignored by society.

Heather chose to feature Ann Lewis aka gilf!, Alonsa Guevara and Anne Mourier from the Verni platform, because they each display a strong command of their medium and also express a unique and empowered voice through their practice.

gilf! is a pioneer in her field as she represents one of NYC’s most recognized and provocative female street artists in a predominantly male scene.

Alonsa Guevara’s vivid paintings provide a contemporary spin on Pre-Raphaelite-esque compositions through a bold exploration of female archetypes and concepts of beauty.

Anne Mourier’s delicate constructions of textiles and miniatures challenge contemporary conceptions of femininity whose roots can be traced all the way back to the Renaissance.
