This fall, Joel Carreiro is exhibiting his solo show Fierce Bliss at Saint Paul the Apostle church in Manhattan. Curated by Michael Berube, 23 works of Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque collages–many of them large scale–were presented throughout the main body of the 19th century church. The exhibition is on view October 30 – November 30, 2013.

Carriero elicits and achieves a strong emotional resonance in his work via structure, content and transformation. His approach is firmly grounded in collage but the works he creates operate as paintings that vacillate between abstraction and narrative as one changes their physical relationship to the work. As an educator, Carreiro is the longtime director of the MFA program at Hunter College.
